Merced Orthodontist BracesIn this day and age, orthodontic technology has given you multiple treatment options. From invisalign to lingual braces, you have more choices to discuss with your orthodontist in Merced, Dr. Richard Rowan. In the past, traditional braces were the primary orthodontic device recommended for malocclusion issues, and it’s for a good reason. Invisalign and lingual braces can offer you discreet treatment, but in many cases, traditional braces can promise better results. How is that possible? Read below for more information.

Fixed Appliance: Metal Braces

Removable aligners, lingual braces, ceramic brackets and metal braces treat malocclusion—that’s the common function. Most people believe the only difference between metal braces and other orthodontic devices is that traditional braces are more noticeable. But metal braces differ for other reasons, good ones.
  • Durability – metal wires and brackets are stronger than ceramic or lingual braces and plastic aligners.
  • Strength – All orthodontic devices treat malocclusion cases, but metal braces are the best choice for severe bite or spacing issues. Your Merced orthodontist wants to improve the alignment, function and esthetic look of your teeth—metal braces can provide those results. Plus, it’s harder for teeth to resist movement when wearing metal braces.
  • Shorter treatment time – If you have severe misalignment, other devices will take longer to make your teeth shift. Metal braces are the best treatment option to fix severe malocclusion.
If you want to know more about your orthodontic options, talk to your Merced orthodontist. Do you think a fixed or removable appliance is your perfect fit?

Merced Mariposa CA Orthodontist Invisalign BracesCircle your Thanksgiving and Christmas dates on your calendar because they will be here before you know it. You get excited for holiday parties and feasts, but it’s important to be careful because holiday food can make it difficult to care for your orthodontia equipment.

Holiday Food

It’s this time of year when people dive into the holiday food without a second thought. However, avoid certain treats such as nuts, caramel apples and candy canes.
  • Nuts – Almonds, peanuts and pecans are the three major nuts found in holiday foods, such as peanut brittle, pecan pie and brownies. They are hard, and you might accidentally bend or break your brackets or wire.

  • Caramel apples – Big, red apples are juicy and crisp, but this fruit puts a lot of pressure on your teeth when you bite into it. The biggest culprits are the caramel apples and chopped nuts. The sticky and hard food particles get stuck between braces, so it’s difficult to remove food residue. If you don’t remove all food particles, you run the risk of developing plaque buildup.
  • Candy canes – They practically scream Christmas, so it’s tempting to nibble on one, but that is the problem. People are too tempted to bite and chew this red and white treat. Chewing on candy canes breaks the candy into sharper pieces, which can damage braces or cut gums. Plus, candy canes are pure sugar and vinegar, and vinegar is a natural acid. Snacking on candy canes allows for the acid and sugar to demineralize enamel, so prolonged consumption can cause tooth decay to occur.
If you got Invisalign in Merced, it may be easier to eat some of these treats, but you still need to be careful with excessive intake of sugary and acidic food. If you accidentally bend or break a bracket on your braces, Merced and Mariposa orthodontist, Dr. Richard Rowan, can help repair and realign little mishaps.
If you travel for the holidays, remember to have your toothbrush and other cleaning tools on hand, so you lessen the chances of developing cavities.
Here at Dr. Rowan’s offices, we wish you happy and safe holiday!
